Prologue: A Nightmare Tree Grows in Brooklyn

The Sept of the Green had noticed an increase of Black Spiral activity south of Prospect Park in Brooklyn. While the borough is across the river from Manhattan, allowing the Wyrm a major foothold so close to the caern would be an unnecessary danger and so the sept’s elders sent out a number of packs (including the player characters) to investigate.

Shortly before dusk, the pack arrived near their assigned scouting area and split up to search the city. Cael and Willow (who was in her lupus form disguised as a service animal) made their way south along the grimy streets toward a number of toxic waste sites. Ten took the rooftops, leaping from building to building through the residential neighborhood, while Serious kept to the sidewalks nearby. Finn kept a line between the two pairs.

As brownstones began to give way to decrepit warehouses and shuttered industrial buildings, Cael suddenly caught the scent of blood on the wind (somewhat ironically, Willow’s sense of smell had only caught a whiff of concentrated ammonia, rendering her briefly ‘nose-blind’). Finn ordered the group to converge on the pair’s location – just as Ten reported sighting some sort of large creature hiding amongst the gargoyles on a rooftop near his location.

Before he could identify it, the figure had disappeared. The Strider crept toward the roof’s edge and was able to hear a mad laughter echoing through the alley – headed in a direction away from the blood scent. Finn made a command decision and ordered the pack to converge on Ten’s location.

Serious and Ten began to race the creature, attempting to get in front of it; leaping from rooftop to rooftop, the Strider eventually outpaced it and reached a perch near the creature’s probable destination – the Silver Rod Drug Company. He watched as a huge monster – a Spiral Dancer – burst from a nearby alley and launched itself into the air. Serious had just come up the sidewalk nearby and threw himself into a tackle toward the Spiral, slamming it down against the sidewalk outside the fence.

As the battle ensued, Serious was burned by a foul Wyrm gift as scars on the Spiral’s body began to shine with a sickly orange glow. The pack rallied against the creature, with Willow tearing at its armor, Finn blasting away with his fetish pistol, and Cael peppering it with arrows from afar. They nearly had the traitorous wolf dead, with Ten’s claw wriggling its way toward the thing’s heart, but then four other crinos Spirals burst from the windows of the factory and leapt to the fray.

Perhaps the most dire of the foes was a massive beast wielding a baneklaive; the silver blade’s cruel bite felled Serious, and had the pack’s totem not intervened the Philodox would have returned to Gaia. Despite this, the Garou were able to rally and take down two of the creatures, one of which they captured alive; the remaining three Spirals scampered away like cowards, leaving their packmates behind.

As the pack made their way hastily back to Finn’s car with the unconscious Spiral in tow, Finn dialed up Flash, the elder of the sept’s Glass Walkers, to ask him what to do with the Wyrm beast. Flash directed the pack to bring the monster to his penthouse across from the park. Just before Finn ended the call, Flash relayed some disturbing news: The body of one of the sept’s cubs, flayed of its skin, had been found near the caern…
